25 years ago it became apparent that people within Hope's neighborhood were experiencing "food insecurity". This sparked Hope Lutheran Food Pantry. The congregation has supported this ministry since that date. It in some ways became a key element of Hope's mission statement of "extending Hope in Jesus". Members of the congregation continue to support through money, volunteer time and supplies.
Hope is located on the northwest corner of Barstow and Fresno Street in a neighborhood of single family homes, large government subsidized apartment complexes, but with minimal governmental social services nearby. This puts a strain on those in need as they must plan and travel great distances for their day to day needs. The Hope Lutheran Food Pantry operates year around on a once per week food distribution schedule every Tuesday from 7:30 am to 9:00am. Hope also is an agency of the Community Food Bank which allows our pantry to become an agent to distribute USDA government food one day per month.
Hope has tracked our food distributions and in 2015, 80,984 pounds of food was distributed, that provided food for 22,706 people.
